Indian cinematography, also known as Bollywood, doesn’t shine from the fact that they make blockbusters flicks the same as Hollywood does.
Bollywood, for those that don’t know, is the world’s largest producer of movies, with more than a thousand movies coming out each year. To celebrate this achievement, we’ve decided to piece together a list of the X most expensive films in Indian history.

1. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion – $46,7 million
When it comes to historic, action-packed movies that originate from Bollywood, none match the cinematography and large scale battles of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
This movie was a sequel to the historic film that Bollywood fell in love with, but the producers had big plans for the sequel. Shobu Yarlahadda and Prasad Devineni, the producers of the movie, opted to increase the scale of the battles so the movie would resemble an Avengers-type of film.
The outcome of this decision would be the highest-grossing Indian film ever made. The worldwide gross of the film currently stands at $230 million.
2. Baahubali: The Beginning – $33,3 million

Conveniently enough, the 2nd most expensive Indian film happens to be the prequel to the one we just talked about.
Baahubali: The Beginning was the movie that took the audience by storm, and the third highest-grossing film India has to show. Baahubali also happens to be the 2nd highest-grossing Telugu and Tamil film, and the first one on this list.
Both Baahubali films have gone down in Indian folklore thanks to the magnificent visuals, a stunning level of detail, and Oscar-worthy acting on behalf of the entire cast.
3. One-Two-Zero(1.2.0)
With a budget of around 450 crores, or $83 million, 1-2-0 is definitely the most expensive film India has ever produced.
However, you’ve noticed we’ve put it at number three on our list. This is because both previous mentions are absolute masterpieces that deserve the number one and two spots, despite costing less than 1.2.0
Now that we’ve said what needs saying, 1.2.0 is a sequel to the 2010 mega movie Enthiran. You most definitely have seen glimpses of this movie even if you don’t watch Bollywood.
1.2.0 is said to have even more action than Enthiran and even more science involved. If you remember from the original flick, the main protagonist can clone himself through scientific measures.
The directors of the movie have said that 1.2.0 will be even more thrilling than its prequel, and they’ve described it as a real “nail biter”.
4. Thugs of Hindostan
With a budget of nearly $38 million, Thugs of Hindostan is an action drama that will cause a mixture of emotions. This movie was a huge success with Bollywood fans, so much that it went down as one of the greatest historical dramas ever made.
The film is said in the 19th century, in the early parts, where India is still a British colony. But the story here is based on a very popular novel, “Confessions of a Thug” by Philip Meadows Taylor.
The novel dates a century before that, in 1839, and many people in India fell in love with the heroics of the main protagonist, the thug.

5. Padmaavat
Slightly ranked above Thugs of Hindostan at $39 million, Padmaavat is yet another Indian film that is based on other people’s creations. However, Padmaavat is based on a sad poem where the main protagonist has to sacrifice her life rather than be captured by the enemy.
Padmaavat is yet another historical film that was one of the first ones to use IMAX 3D technology. The movie was a mega-hit in India and the rest of the world, resulting in a worldwide gross of $105 million!
The heroics and sacrifice of Rani Padmaavat, the main hero, has inspired millions of people and brought tears to countless others.
6. Tiger Zinda Hai
Yet another Indian film that stands in the range of $38 million, Tiger Zinda Hai employs some of the most talented people in the industry.
The movie was highly expected in Bollywood, and with good reasons since Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Sajjad Delfooz were the leading roles.
This film is a sequel to the 2012 super popular film Ek Tha Tiger. The movie is a masterpiece drama where Indian and Pakistani nurses are held hostage by an oppressive Iraqi regime.
The movie has stunning visuals, nail-biting scenes, and breathtaking acting that is nothing short of Oscar-worthy. The movie was so popular worldwide that it made almost $90 million.
7. Dilwale
With a hefty budget of around $30 million, Dilwale is the first film on this list that isn’t inspired by a poem, or a novel, nor is it a historical drama.
Dilwale is a romantic movie from 2015 where the audience had to wait long lines to see it. The movie is a romantic masterpiece, one that you’ve never seen before.
In the movie, the dynamic duo of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol depict emotions of unprecedented scales. The main protagonist of the film, Shah Rukh Khan, is a mafia member that sees a rival gang chase after Kajol.
Shah decides to go after her and save her from the violent gang members. Upon rescuing her, both of them fall in love with what seems to be a forbidden true love. Upon finding out that Kajol is the daughter of yet another rival gang, the two are forbidden from seeing each other, even if they are in love.
So, the two decide to part their ways and forget about the past. The real twister comes at the end where the siblings of Kajol and Shah also fall in love.
Due to this, both protagonists are allowed to see each other and cement their love.
The movie was a huge success on both the Indian and worldwide scene, making a total of $60 million.
