Blue Peacock was actually designed to be deployed in Germany, not England. Still amazingly dumb though.

Surprised you didn't mention the MIM-14 Nike-Hercules, which was designed to fire a 30KT warhead into a squadron of incoming bombers. *shudder*

Somebody needs to spend a little more time doing research. First of all the W 54 was PART of the Davy Crockett system. It was a dirty little nuke desigend to be an area denial weapon, i.e. you either went around the contaminated area or you racked up mass casualties going through it. Since the majority of the D C systems were deployed in the Fulda Gap they were there to deter Soviet Motor Rifle formations from moving into western Europe. Is the idea of tactical Nukes scary? Hell yeah! But did the threat of using them deter the Soviets? Also Hell Yeah!

In addition, the W54 was also the nuclear portion of the SADM, so the author only really talks about three systems. I enjoy how some people love to use the word “stupid” to describe things they really don’t understand, and just copy and paste off the internet (really the most reliable of sources)

What’s missing here is the obviously most stupid nuclear weapon so far, project Pluto. Basically a flying nuclear reactor armed with nuclear bombs. Once the nuclear bombs have been deployed the plan was to fly Pluto criss-cross the enemy territory at low altitude with supersonic speed, killing pretty much everything in its path due to the intense radiation emitting through its ramjet propulsion system.

Too bad wit is not synonymous with intelligence. The Soviet Union was not just a country with a different economic system. It was a form of government that would not tolerate any form of criticism. They even encouraged you to inform on your neighbors or relatives if they did not toe the communist line. They even had a convenient website to inform on your neighbors who didn’t want the government running their healthcare system. (Oops. That’s O’Bama, not Gorbachev) Anyway, if you didn’t like your neighbors, instead of dumping a bottle of roundup on their lawn, you informed the KGB that they drank Budweiser instead of Vodka, and they would disappear.

The MK-54 SADM was a bit more nuanced than the author describes. The concept was actually well thought out and immense training went into the entire program. The SADM was not for “situations” but instead as part of the Exercise Reforger where the US Army’s 12E designated trained soldiers would place the SADM in special selected emplacement chambers built into large public structures such as bridges/dams. Then, and only if, when the Soviet Army came west through the Fulda Gap would these be deployed as buffers against the Soviet forces until the US military could return, hence the name REturn-FORces-to-GERmany.

Furthermore the device had an electroplanewave generator which had a timer built in … allowing the technician the ability to set the device off with enough time to be in Tahiti if he wanted. (Since the military occupational specialty or MOS was combat rated, it was only for men) The device was not heavy or awkward to carry. It was 58 1/2 pounds encased in a foam rubber with the weight well distributed. The half-foam outer-shell back support was easy to re-position after making an airborne/helicopter jump.  So in short, it was designed well, built with specific purpose and in truth … was the most accurate weapon in the nuclear arsenal. It was not an offensive weapon but defensive.

Maybe you should reconsider your assessment …
