There are, in the human mind, very few vital needs. Food. Shelter. Clothing. The beast with two backs. And, ever since we discovered we could make other people farm the food and kill the meat, and just pay them with other stuff to do it, we’ve been trying to satisfy those needs more fully, but with a new problem added in: boredom. So we spend a lot of time amusing ourselves too, which led to video games.

And, inevitably, games and sex met. This was not the glorious, light-from-the-heavens union we see in romance flicks. No, it was, and still is, the awkward, horribly embarrassing fumbling of that first time. And there’s no sign that gaming and doing it are going to get any better at the act of uniting, as witnessed by these five disasters.

We don’t actually get most of our drugs from labs, believe it or not. No, we get most of our drugs from the natural world, namely plants. And most of those drugs have actually evolved not because of some higher being who wants us to get wasted, or improve the flavor of our food, but because they can really mess up the day of anything that isn’t a human dumb enough to eat them.

WeirdWorm would like to take this moment to remind you that (some) drugs are bad. Drugs are very, very bad (sometimes). You should avoid doing drugs as much as possible (usually). Some drugs have fatal side effects, but all drugs are inherently funny, which is why we’re focusing on them so much.

If you happened to have been a teen in the 90’s (the Beavis & Butthead age) it was certainly a “dope” time to be coming of age. If you were one of the lucky ones, your biggest problems were likely trivial (depending on which crowd you ran with).

Everybody wants to be the greatest in the world at something. That’s why we have events like the Olympics: to celebrate the incredible achievements of people who have completely and utterly mastered their chosen skill. Unfortunately, we can’t all be world class sprinters or swimmers. <itunes:summary>Everybody wants to be the greatest in the world at something. Thatrsquo;s why we have events like the Olympics: to celebrate the incredible achievements of people who have completely and utterly mastered their chosen skill. Unfortunately, we canrsquo;t all be world class sprinters or swimmers. But donrsquo;t worry: there are enough people who have the desire to be a world champion at something, anything, that ridiculously specific events have been created, allowing pretty much anyone who gets serious about them to immediately count themselves as among the best in the world. So if you want to be a world champ but donrsquo;t want to put too much effort into earning your title, then consider competing at one of these weird tournaments.

1.
Rock-Paper-Scissors

Rock-Paper-Scissors is the universal method of conflict resolution for children and immature adults, and ever since 2002 the World RPS Society (a group dedicated to promoting the game around the world, for the benefit of the three people who have never heard of it) has hosted an annual world championship. You would think that a tournament based around a game thatrsquo;s pure luck would be a rather dull affair, and, well, yoursquo;d be right. But dull doesnrsquo;t have to mean small and cheap; just look at NASCAR.
For starters, therersquo;s a pretty serious cash prize, generally around 10,000 dollars. Therersquo;s also a surprising amount of media coverage and sponsorship. The 2009 tournament was sponsored by Yahoo, although we think that says less about the prestige of RPS than it does about Yahoorsquo;s sad state. And since anyone can enter, all you need to be the greatest in the world is a little luck and, judging by this video, a completely retarded costume.

2.
Sauna

Therersquo;s nothing inherently competitive about sitting in a steamy room and sweating with a bunch of fat guys, but that didnrsquo;t stop some crazy Finnish people from creating the Sauna World Championships. The rules are pretty simple: whoever can last the longest wins. But the competitors arenrsquo;t sitting around in your grandmarsquo;s sauna; they sauna hardcore, starting proceedings off at a balmy 230 degrees and hitting a hot stove with a half-litre of water every 30 seconds to keep the steam coming. Itrsquo;s not a winner takes all event either; the tournament requires four rounds spread out over two days. And for an event that demands no movement, we have to admit that a fair bit of physical effort is involved. Although we expect that 90% of it is just chugging down as much Gatorade as you can before your turn.
The spectacle draws a decent crowd, which is proof that therersquo;s absolutely nothing of interest in Finland. Seriously, think about it; itrsquo;s a bunch of people sitting around and watching a grainy camera feed of a bunch of other people sitting in a steamy, barely visible room. What could possibly make people want to - oh, apparently beer and sausages flow like water. Sweet, wersquo;re in!

3.
Mobile Phone Throwing

Throwing unwieldy crap as far as possible is one of the oldest tests of strength and skill in history. Whether itrsquo;s tossing a heavy metal ball, discus or letting loose with a javelin, these simple but impressive feats are done by athletes who need to train long and hard if they want to have any hope of becoming the worldrsquo;s greatest. But when you change the object being thrown to something retarded, like a cell phone, then suddenly all of the prestige and respectability vanishes into thin air.
An annual competition is usually held in Finland (seriously Finland, find some real hobbies), and includes both a pure distance event as well as one that rewards style and choreography. Wersquo;re not sure how much grace you can add to the flinging of your Nokia, and to show you just how low the standards are: the 2008 edition was won by a dog that spat a phone a few centimeters forward. So hey, you could have a future mobile phone throwing ...</itunes:summary>

Hollywood lives and dies on creating a sense of realism in its films. That includes brands that the characters actually use. The problem being, of course, that the owners of these brands want to get paid money to be featured in major Hollywood films, especially if the movie is, say, rife with sex and violence and they’re worried about being seen as too offensive by the three people that will actually notice the hero slammed a Red Bull before throwing the impossibly hot actress into bed and making PG-13-rated love to her.

So what’s Hollywood to do? Make up their own brands, of course! They’ve been doing it for decades and, in fact, some of these brands are so established, you might mistake them for actual products. Some of them get featured more often and have a better reputation than regular products. Likes these lovely products:

<itunes:summary>Hollywood lives and dies on creating a sense of realism in its films. That includes brands that the characters actually use. The problem being, of course, that the owners of these brands want to get paid money to be featured in major Hollywood films, especially if the movie is, say, rife with sex and violence and they're worried about being seen as too offensive by the three people that will actually notice the hero slammed a Red Bull before throwing the impossibly hot actress into bed and making PG-13-rated love to her.
So what's Hollywood to do? Make up their own brands, of course! They've been doing it for decades and, in fact, some of these brands are so established, you might mistake them for actual products. Some of them get featured more often and have a better reputation than regular products. Likes these lovely products:

1.
Morley

Morley cigarettes debuted opposite the greatest actor, and greatest Canadian, to ever walk the Earth, Mr. William Shatner. He smoked Morleys in "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet", the original "scared out of your mind on an airplane" thriller that created the oldest joke about something on the wing of the airplane. It was funny, once. No, before the terrorists.
Morleys were forged into existence because cigarette companies paid good money to sponsor television programs and you couldn't present a sponsor in a bad light. Then, as people realized cigarettes were, ah, fatal, they decided they didn't want to pay money to anybody who was currently in a public relations disaster, and it's just kept rolling right like that to today. Probably the most famous Morleys smoker was the "X-Files" adversary the Cigarette Smoking Man. Understandably, there wasn't a huge rush to sponsor his habit.
On the bright side, at least they're not Red Apple cigarettes. Butch from "Pulp Fiction" got a pack and was nearly sodomized to death by crazed rednecks. And you thought lung cancer was bad!

2.
Finder-Spyder

Just like physical products, web programs have brands, and no brand is more popular or more deeply engrained into the public consciousness than Google. Seriously, what search engine do you use, aside from the five guys with the Ubuntu laptop using some program nobody's ever heard of? Google has become so popular it's an official verb at this point.
Unfortunately, it's also five hundred bucks a share, and when you're worth billions, featuring your brand will cost you accordingly. So instead, they use "Finder-Spyder", which seems to have a wide variety of skins and styleshellip; ones that change with each show and with each prop master. We can't imagine why that is, although we suppose Google changes its "doodle" often enough that you can view it as a different search engine every day.

3.
Penzberg Beer

OK, that's not an actual photo of the brand, but Google wasn't coughing it up. So sue us.
Beer sits somewhere between cigarettes and other products. Yes, too much beer will kill you, although we're pretty sure the only way most American macrobrews could kill you is if you poured a lot of it into a vat and then jumped in. Hogtied. But it's also smooth, delicious and consists of about 25% of American advertising because advertising and stupid gimmicks are the only way anybody will buy that pale yellow swill. Seriously, guys? A bottle that turns blue? A unicorn horn on top of a beer bottle?
Anyway, as a result of their brand being valuable and their spending a lot of money on advertising, it's pretty hard to get a beer brand. That's where Independent Studio Services comes in. They make all sorts of prop alcohols, but probably the most popular now that they've retired Heisler is Penzberg beer. When actors have to pretend drinking, they enjoy a Penzberg, the smoothest of fake beers.</itunes:summary>

When a comic book becomes incredibly popular, the only logical thing a publisher can do is create a spin-off exploring other characters. Sometimes you get a series that can carry its own weight, like the Batman spinoff Robin, but more often than not you’re left with duds like these five titles.

1.

Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane

Between 1958 and 1979, any character of moderate significance warranted a spin-off, and for evidence of this you need look no further than Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane. As the title would suggest, the book was a means to explore Superman’s other half in greater detail because Supe’s own book was dedicated to action, adventure, justice and other things the average adolescent male certainly didn’t really give a damn about.

There really is nothing quite like a massive tomb to say “Look at me! I was really, really important!” Time is the great equalizer, forgetting most men and turning great men into trivia questions (just look at this list and tell us how many of these guys you’ve ever heard of), but if you’ve got the cash, the ego, and (usually) the slave labor to do it, you can leave behind some really kickin’ reminders of how awesome you used to be. Like, for example:

Collectible card games, or CCGs to the nerd in a hurry, exploded in the early ’90s as the hot alternative to pen-and-paper role-playing. “Magic: The Gathering” was an exciting new way to play with friends and combining this with the tantalizing prospect of wasting lots of money soon lured in legions of fans.

The most interesting heroes in films are often relatively flawed and make their fair share of mistakes. Much like in real life (where lightsabres and AT-AT’s sadly do not exist) it’s these mistakes which help us to learn and grow. This brings us to Luke Skywalker, who is undoubtedly one of the most popular and beloved heroes in the entire Star Wars universe, but is also among the biggest screwups in the history of cinema.

Stick around and hear us out. There just might be a collectable Boba Fett PEZ dispenser in it for you… though probably not.

Many Star Wars fans base Luke’s unequivocal awesomeness on the grounds that he blew up the first Death Star. However, let’s not forget that he only achieved that feat thanks to Han Solo’s timely assistance and with Obi-Wan in his ear, all “Use the Force, Luke.”, and “The Force will be with you, always.” Reportedly, he also added “Luke, zipper up!”, which really saved him some embarrassment at the final award ceremony.

The two guys behind R2 do however have their zippers down for reasons we’d rather not discuss.

Upon further inspection, Luke’s failures were quite numerous. Frankly we find it surprising that others haven’t picked up on this before. Luke tends to mostly receive praise and adoration but few fans fault Luke for anything outside of his whiny attitude in A New Hope. Our intention is to boldly shatter Luke’s near perfect image with the following notable examples of his biggest fails throughout the Star Wars saga.

6.

Sandpeople / Cantina FAIL

Prior to even stepping foot in the Cantina of Doom, Luke was saved by Obi-Wan from Sandpeople who had viscously attacked him. It should be noted however that the attack in question only went down because Luke had carelessly removed a restraining bolt from R2 which allowed him to run off in the first place.

(...)
Read the rest of Luke Skywalker’s 6 Biggest FAILS (1,953 words)

Behind every good super-hero is a great sidekick. But behind every great sidekick is a long line of chumps who just couldn’t make the cut as Robin the Boy Wonder.

Though some sidekicks are considered to be just as iconic as the heroes they aid, others have fallen to the wayside, almost vanishing from popular culture completely. These sidekicks were once in the limelight but had it taken away, often for very good reasons.

Superheroes have been with us since the 1930s. With their simple morality, bright costumes, and science-mangling powers, we’ve had literally thousands of superheroes created. And sometimes they get recreated, usually proving that as goofy as the original might have been, it can get a whole hell of a lot goofier.

<itunes:summary>It's not always easy being a woman. Sure, you have the benefit of certain assets that can be used for fun or profit when dealing with members of the opposite sex. But on the flip side, those assets are always in demand, and sometimes they need protecting when someone gets a little too friendly.
It's nice to know that, if you're wandering around the dangerous streets of major cities such as Los Angeles or New York, you'll have a way to defend yourself without worrying about whether the sheath for your knife matches your dress. Because if you can manage to squeeze in to (literally, in some cases) some of the fashion trends on this list, you'll never be without a practical and fashionable weapon close to hand. What more could a girl ask for? Except a hunky bodyguard, perhaps...

1.
Stilettos

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Despite popular belief, dangerous to more than just the wearer."][/caption]

When it comes to fashion, it's well known that women will go to great lengths (or in this case, great heights) to win in the never ending inter-woman competition of "I'm sexier than you." What better sacrifice can you make to the fashion gods than to constrict your feet in stilettos, which are uncomfortable, terrible for running in, and can cause injuries and diseases such as osteoarthritis? Following this trend is certainly just a few wobbly steps away from a carefree life supported by the largesse of your new sugar daddy.
But we bet that you didn't know that there's a method in the midst of this madness. That's right, stilettos are good for more than just an excellent form of self-flagellation. In a pinch, the shoes can be used as a weapon, as one pregnant stripper found out when she assaulted someone with a stiletto.
We're guessing that men are never going to look at their girlfriend's shoe closet in exactly the same light. And now women can be comforted during their long walks home carrying the cute shoes that are just such a pain to wear, instead of cursing themselves for not making better shoe choices (that donrsquo;t compliment their gams).

2.
Enormous Purses

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="405" caption="It#39;s hard to find room for your Tic Tacs with all the concealed weapons in there..."][/caption]
This one's easy. If you've never had the chance to look through a purse, get on your knees and thank whatever you call holy. These fortresses of security render any important object instantly invisible once it enters the purse interior, and the bigger the purse, the more violent weapons can be stored within. A woman could have an AK-47, several sets of nunchucks, and a few hand grenades for good measure in one of these things, and no one other than herself would ever be the wiser.
The only drawback is that the woman herself might not be able to find what she's looking for. In that case, though, the purse is just as good a weapon as its contents.
Once the woman realizes that her plight to locate said weaponry in a pinch is futile, she can always use her enormous purse to fend off her attackers. It wouldn't be the first time that such a thing has happened. A good wallop to the side of the head with one of those things is bound to be painful, if not actually lethal. Just consider what it would be like to be hit in the side of the head with a five to ten pound dumbbell - yeah, it's going to be something like that. With a hefty dose of anger on the other side.
Or, she could just carry around a purse shaped as a mace. And who said that fashion wasn't efficient?

3.
Belts Over Clothing

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="350" caption="Women: defeating the useful aspects of clothing since pretty much forever."][/caption]
A woman finds herself cornered and empty-handed. What to do? Well, if she's wearing one of those fabulous belted sweaters, dresses, or unholy sweater-dress monstrosities, she'll never be unarmed.
But I have a belt too, you might say. True; but how...</itunes:summary>

In 1674, the first auction house was opened in Sweden. It was named Stockholms Auktionsverk. In modern times, thousands of precious antiques and historical artifacts are auctioned off every year. Some of the most popular hobbies in the world include collecting cars, coins, stamps, paintings, sculptures, and a number of other high quality items. The most valuable collectables are famous pieces of art, either paintings or sculptures, but many other items have raised millions of dollars at auction. This article will be documenting 16 of the highest selling items in auction history. It is organized by category and will be exploring fifteen separate types of collectables.

Highest Selling U.S. Government Auction

U.S. Wireless Spectrum Sale

If you live in the United States (and aren’t a total lush) then you remember the government advertising campaign that was launched in 2008 to inform the public about the U.S. digital television transition. On June 12, 2009, all full power TV stations in the U.S. ceased analog broadcasting. Before the change, the analog TV broadcasting spectrum was the accepted method used for transmitting television signals for free over-the-air TV programming. On January 24, 2008, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) opened an auction and accepted bids on a United States 700 MHz FCC wireless spectrum. It was officially known as Auction 73.

The event sparked major controversy between some of the largest telecommunication companies in the world, including Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and Google Inc. The 700 MHz spectrum that was being sold was previously used for analog television broadcasting, specifically UHF channels 52 through 69. After the change to digital television was announced, the FCC ruled that these TV frequencies were no longer necessary for broadcasters. The auction divided the UHF spectrum into 5 blocks. The most highly publicized block was the open access C-Block, which was sold to Verizon for $4.74 billion. In all, Auction 73 raised an astounding $19.59 billion.

<itunes:summary>Lego's have got to be the most adaptable toy on the planet. In the hands of a child they are a choking hazard. In the hands of an adult they're a multi-thousand dollar investment and a huge waste of time.
The beauty of Legos is that you can build anything ndash; anything at all ndash; if you have the dedication to click little pieces of plastic together for huge amounts of time. Instructions? Aw hell naw! They don't print an instruction sheet for success, son. If you're gonna make it big in the constructible toy bracket then you're going to have to fly by the seat of your pants and boldly into the blocky future.

1.
A Harpsichord
Henry Lim is an odd fellow. If you venture over to his website you'll note that he's made a hobby of Lego sculptures. His subjects range from a replica bust of Beethoven, a gray-scale mosaic of Catwoman from Tim Burton's Batman Returns and a fourteen foot long stegosaurus. But as impressive as spending seven months building a dinosaur out of a children's toy is, these feats don't compare to building a functioning musical instrument.

Lim's harpsichord weighs in at about one-hundred and fifty pounds and is made almost entirely of Lego bricks (over one-hundred thousand in all). The only non-Lego pieces are wire strings, though if he had a government grant wersquo;re sure Lim would have found a way to build those, too. It has a surprisingly good range of sixty-one notes, which is sixty-one notes more than your Aquanauts set could ever hope to achieve. According to Lim, the whole thing took two years of planning, building, rebuilding (due to implosion) and finalizing. Originally he wanted to build a piano but had to settle for building a harpsichord because the strings didn't need to hold as much tension. Think about that for a second: he had to settle for building a harpsichord from colorful plastic.

2.
A Pinball Machine
I don't know much about The Netherlands or the fine people who choose to dwell there, but apparently the host something called the LegoWorld exhibition, a gathering of those tiny little bricks and the people who love them. Two of these people, Gerrit Bronsveld and Martijn Boogaarts, proved in 2005 that the only thing they love more than Legos is a good pinball machine. Finding that their two loves had yet to overlap, they decided to go all in and make their own Lego pinball machine.

Constructed with over twenty-thousand bricks, the only pieces not made of Lego are glass and steel balls used for gameplay. Everything else, from the plunger and coin slot to the motors and computers, are made from Legos. The more advanced aspects come from the Mindstorm series. Mindstorm features computers which can be programmed for simple functions. Of course, you need to create your own programming language to make it all work, but Bronsveld and Boogaarts did just that, using thirteen of the devices to pull it all together, controlling motion and weight sensors as well as a series of lights on the scoreboard and playfield. Game play begins when a fifty Euro cent piece is inserted, so save your American quarters.

3.
A Car
When you think of Legos, do you think of safety? Most people would say ldquo;no,rdquo; because they've probably tried to swallow one as a child or as a heavily intoxicated adult. But the folks at Volvo would disagree with you. In 2004, they formed a partnership with Lego to feature a replica Volvo XC90 at the American Legoland theme park. The idea is to promote driving safety, which makes perfect sense once you reflect upon the durability of Legos compared to the modern car. Or at least Toyotas.

Though inoperable (your expectations would have to be pretty absurd to think that a minivan made of plastic bricks would actually function) it is an exact replica of the XC90 down to the license plate. The piece was constructed by Legoland's elite Master Builders, a secret cabal of hooded individuals who construct the park's largest projects. The construction of the X...</itunes:summary>

Video games have a long and complex history. The Atari crash. Nintendo saving the entire industry. The rise of Sony. And even today a game console designed for simple games that appeal to old people and children and makes them stand up and flail around like loons makes cash by the bucket while “hardcore” gamers scream bloody murder about it and the other two systems fight tooth and nail for second place.

But, although we only remember a few systems, the history of gaming is littered with many consoles. Some were ahead of their time. Some were way behind before they were even released. Others were bad ideas. And still others, five to be specific, deserved the heaping helping of miserable failure that was force-fed to them. Whether it was charging way too much, eating batteries like a fat kid eats cake, or simply not having a reason to exist, here are the five that deserved everything fate gave them and more.

Who wouldn’t want to live in a world occupied by superheroes and super villains? Okay maybe not the villains so much. Still, imagine never having to worry about falling down an open sewer (as opposed to falling down open sewers 2-3 times a week). Or perhaps being free to roam through creepy alleys knowing Spiderman or Batman has your back. Well, snap out of it, watch where you’re walking and stay out of alleys because we’re doomed to live in crappy reality. The best our “not-so-super” world has to offer us are the following candidates…

Following extensive market research and several colorful PowerPoint presentations, it appears that the money in African Americans’ wallets is of equal value to the money in Caucasian people’s wallets. Science! With that in mind, Hollywood execs have done their best to get that green and thus obtain even more yachts, blow and high-priced hookers. However, this tinsel town venture goes far beyond whatever it is Tyler Perry is famous for. We here at Weirdworm have managed to compile an interesting list of awkward and often not so subtle Hollywood attempts to appeal to the “urban market”.

There has been a great deal of speculation about the existence of other forms of intelligent life in the universe. Some claim that we are alone. Others say that it’s like sober Irishman: it exists but we may never find it. Still others believe that we have already made contact, citing various probing-related accounts as evidence.

Were an intelligent, advanced species able to observe our planet, there’s a good chance that things would probably only going poorly for us. Best case scenario: they find our bumbling hilarious and make us the space equivalent of bears riding tricycles in the circus. But in all likelihood they might just wipe us off this rock for our sins and let evolution roll the dice again.

Not that we don’t deserve it. Forget the war, famine, disease and terrorism; we can’t even decide basic stuff, like what to call our fizzy beverages. Let’s look at the ways we’re failing to get organized as a species, and maybe then we can work on no longer being the laughingstock of the galaxy.

5.

We Still Can’t Agree How to Observe Things

One of the most basic tasks we do as an intelligent species is make observations. It’s vital to our survival. We assess temperature when we get dressed in the morning before going out so we don’t freeze to death. We gauge distance, speed and time on our way to work so we won’t be late. We estimate the weight of the prostitute we pick up after work so we don’t get crushed to death. All of these pedestrian, daily tasks involve making observations and these observations are measured in units.

If there’s one universal constant in our world, it’s that people want to be slimmer, trimmer, and sexier. No matter how attractive a person is, they’re never satisfied; it’s actually coded into our brains as a survival mechanism, because making you miserable is fun for your brain. And people are willing to pay through the nose to get that last millimeter of fat off, no matter how much it costs, no matter how stupid they look, no matter how insane the idea even is. Here are twelve very, very sad methods trying to cash in on this tragic evolutionary quirk.

If you wish to put out a television show and market it to kids, you basically have two options: gently educate them, or suck their parents for every dollar they own. Teaching kids and molding them into responsible adults is a wonderful venture, but it’s also really, really hard. Luckily, it’s far easier to just flash a bunch of shiny stuff in front of their faces and basically hypnotize them into screaming and crying until Mom and Dad buy them everything they saw on the tube that morning. These six shows have turned option two into an art form.

1.

Transformers and He-Man

These are the ones that started it all, basically. Prior to the mid-1980’s, there were several strict advertising laws in place that prohibited television creators and producers from creating shows that blatantly used their shows as an excuse to sell toys. Well, if you enjoy being pandered to in cartoon form, you have President Reagan to thank. He authorized the deregulation of the kid’s show industry, mainly because all those wars we were fighting back then were just too quick and easy (hi Grenada!). So he needed something to do.

The war really freed up his schedule.

Everyone loves a good super-villain. There’s something about a madman in tights committing heinous acts of violence that everyone loves. Everyone also loves absurdly bad villains because you know the waddling man in the top hat isn’t going to beat Batman but dammit, he’s giving it his all. Isn’t that all that really matters?

After serving in and losing his brother to one of America’s undefined wars, Gordon Thomas returns home only to have his wife leave him with their son. Left with nothing, Thomas decides to become a new, less interesting man by becoming a sign smith, smithing signs for Ace Signs. Then Ace Signs is purchased by apparent sign enthusiast George Finch. Now without a sign to smith, Thomas makes the logical career choice of becoming a villain in New York City. Now known as Typeface, Thomas draws letters all over his body and attacks people with comically oversized letters for seemingly no reason; he attacks thugs on the basis that they’re thugish and goes out of his way to strike down Spider-Man because that’s apparently what you do when you’re angry in New York.

If you want to know how to determine whether a diet is a scam, use the following simple process:

Does it charge you money to tell you to restrict caloric intake and exercise more? Then it’s a scam!

Sorry, but there’s no bulletproof easy way to lose weight beyond just not eating Baconators for breakfast and working out more. You’ve got to eat more vegetables, eat less crap, and hit the gym for once in your life, fatso. The diet industry, however, has managed to turn this basic truth into a massive scam that any con man would be proud of. Seriously, these guys make billions repackaging the same advice. And even better, the audience never takes that advice! Two-thirds of Americans are overweight and want to do something about it.

Unfortunately, there are only so many iterations of one scam you can do, and the diet industry increasingly finds itself hitting a brick wall when it comes to originality.

The list of weird song covers is nearly bottomless. For every tune, there’s a musician who should never perform it under any circumstances. And thanks to an absentee God, that musician is practically guaranteed to choose that song to slather with “their own flavor”. Generally, the worst offenders are part of a longstanding musical war wherein a pop act murders a metal classic, or a metal act murders a pop classic. We thought we’d split the difference, and give you a little of both.

1.

“Enter Sandman” – Pat Boone

So, did you know Pat Boone actually put out an entire album of jazz covers of metal songs? That’s the kind of fact that has never been greeted by anything better than silence and the slow uncorking of a bottle of Jack Daniels. There are a lot of gems on the set, but this, for our money, is both the strangest and the one that works the best. Boone, for those unfamiliar, was absolutely insanely popular in the ’60s, and your grandma probably owns all of his albums except for this one. He is one of the most important figures in the entire history of white people thoroughly ripping off black culture. He was so popular, he got beaten up by Superman:

Comic books and music. Two things that are widely and wildly consumed by people the world over. Musicians read comics, sometimes they write comics. Occassionally you get comic artists and writers playing music. They are two wonderful artistic mediums, no doubt about it. However, unlike peanut butter and chocolate, which are two great tastes that go great together, somehow musicians starring in the comics just doesn’t seem to work out.

1.

Prince

From DC’s ill-fated Piranha Press imprint of a couple of decades back comes this incredibly odd concept for a comic book. Prince, back when he was called Prince the first time around, stars as a sort of version of himself. We say “sort of” because while he is portrayed as around 5 feet tall, and he is shown to be a musician, that’s about where it stops, reality-wise.

The story, such as it is, is one that could be told in 2-3 pages but instead fills the entire book. Prince and this other guy, named Gemmini, who was his…evil twin…or something, were very close when they were starting out, see. Only Prince learned to use his incredible musical gift for good, and this other fellow, well, for reasons not adequately (read: not at all) explored, his music incites folks to riot and kill each other.

There’s also some rot about Prince’s current girlfriend being a spy for the other guy or something, but truthfully, everything wrong with this comic (which admittedly was under a gorgeous Brian Bolland cover) can be summed up thusly: Prince, after taking a baseball bat away from the bad guys, sort of… shoves on it with his high-heeled boot and just shatters the thing. Prince, the little 5 foot nothing dude weighing no more than 110 pounds soaking wet, shatters a friggin’ baseball bat.

There’s also a totally weird moment where Prince brings a woman back to life with the power of Purple Rain, but seriously, a baseball bat.

(...)
Read the rest of 6 Comic Books About Musicians Who Should Have Known Better (1,082 words)

There are many reasons to fight a war. It could be over resources or religion. It could be because of politics or power. It’s usually over people wanting a plot of land that someone else seems to want to occupy. One thing remains constant- people love to kill each other. In fact, the only thing people like more than killing each other is attaching nebulous concepts to “why” they are killing each other.

In the case of civil wars, men are even willing to turn against their own countrymen and brothers. Why? Freedom. Bar-b-cue. Baseball. All of them are probably accurate. Nevertheless, as Americans, our barometer for civil war stems from our own experience- the “war of northern aggression.” It may come as a disappointment to some Americans to know that we aren’t even the best at war, our national pastime.

1.

Chinese Civil War, 1927-1936, 1946-1950

There is a certain balance to nature. Some people call it “yin” and “yang”. Those people are called, “hippies” by everyone else. This balance manifests itself with mortal enemies- mongoose and cobra, Autobot and Decepticon, communist and everyone else. In the case of the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Kai-Shek and Mao Zedong fit the latter category. While sounding strangely like Streetfighter characters- these two men represented factions that truly hated each other- the nationalists and the communists, respectively. Both sides were fighting for power and maybe freedom- so they sought to oppress each other as brutally as possible.

Who doesn’t love chocolate? That’s not a rhetorical question; we’re asking because in our calculations, not liking chocolate is the first sign of being a witch. We have bar graphs that prove it. Unfortunately, since most of us have been exposed to chocolate since we were children, we often think of it as something about which we know almost everything that is worth knowing. Lucky for you, we here at WeirdWorm have compiled the following list of entries to show you exactly how surprising and colorful the faces about our favorite obesity booster can be.

1.

Chocolate Led to Microwave Oven’s Invention:

One website tells us that when scientists were testing devices called magnetrons after World War 2, in one lab, a scientist named Percy Spencer got near a magnetron. It just so happened that he discovered the bar of chocolate in his pocket had melted from standing so close to the device. Spencer started suspecting the magnetrons were responsible, which, quite frankly, would have been fourth on our list of suspects in the situation, below our body temperature, cloth temperature and fart temperature.

The Internet is full of information, but it can be hard to find exactly the information you need. That’s where databases come in, and fortunately, no matter how nasty something is, it’s probably got a database dedicated to it! Like these five! Yes, these conglomerations of depravity are all very real, so click the included links at your own risk.

Since this article deals with obscene acts, offensive terms, celebrity nudity, and other things that Weird Worm, being a site that has advertisers, can’t exactly feature pictures of, we’ve decided to include images from Google Image Search by using the word “Database”. Apparently this yields lots of flowcharts and clip art. Enjoy!
