6 Elements Every Final Fantasy Game Has

That One That’s Just Too Happy

All Final Fantasy games are originally made in Japan and are then translated into English. It would therefore be understandable if certain characters or specific dialogue came across a little tweaked – there’s always something that gets lost in translation. Still, there seems to be one character in every game that goes way beyond anything that can be explained by bad translating.

Always bouncing around, rarely focused on the problem at hand, and with a giggling, high-pitched voice that makes you wish someone invented a machine that allowed you to punch people through TV screens. These characters are usually always girls, and are one of the main reasons that the Final Fantasy franchise has been accused of creating characters that aren’t “human.” They are rarely scared or sad, and are always sickeningly optimistic. We’d list them, but frankly, there’s too many to mention. The only one of note is Selphie, and that’s only because without her, the entire cast of FFVIII probably would have committed suicide.

Gaia Hypothesis

This one might be one of the more difficult elements to incorporate into your new game, if only because you would have to create a story in which the world would in some way literally come into play. We’ll explain. The Gaia Hypothesis states that all aspects of a world are interrelated and form a complex system to maintain biogeochemical homeostasis.

Final Fantasy takes it further. In all games, the integrity of the very earth comes into play, and in order to maintain balance, the world comes alive to defend itself. The most well known instance would be in FFVII. When a meteor was about to strike the planet, it used its energy (called “lifeforce”) to create a force field of sorts, and shielded itself from destruction. Too bad our world isn’t governed by this type of Gaia Theory – people with SUV’s would probably find themselves suddenly immune to gravity.

The Gung-Ho Hero

All of us want to punch the happy character. There’s no use denying it. Unfortunately, some of us might have a moral issue with it, seeing as they’re just so innocent and…happy. Thankfully for those people, there’s the gung-ho hero. “Let’s go get ‘em guys!” “Hero’s don’t NEED plans.” “BooYa!” You see what we mean. This is the second half of the non-human aspect of Final Fantasy, and it has caused many people to shy away from the series as a whole. The hero is optimistic like the “too happy” character, but that optimism is not just based on naivety. It is paired with stubbornness and a horrible, debilitating stupidity. Best part? They’re so full of themselves, they’d probably welcome a punch to the face as a chance to show you how tough they are.
