The plane did not slide across the motorway, it hit the bank on the far side and bounced over the motorway. The crew did shut down the wrong engine, the alarms in the cockpit said that no2 was faulty. By the time the crew realised the error, it was too late to start no2 again. This crash resulted in a worldwide grounding of many boing planes, as it was found that this error was a result of incorrect wiring at the boing factory. They got the alarm circuits the wrong way round. Loosing an engine in a multi engine plane is not a fatal problem, but it helps if the alarms tell you the correct one.
